Proportion Matters in Mens Classic Tailored Clothing

The gentleman who is careful about clothing and style should also be in control of what looks good on him and his body’s proportions. However, nowadays a well-dressed man with a self-assured confidence is often rare. What is in store today for men’s clothing can only fit a small percentage of average sizes which means not a lot to choose from. Tailored clothing is the way to go if you wish to obtain a perfectly fitted suit. Something you may not often find when you purchase your clothes off the rack. And if you prefer a suit or shirt unique to you, custom made is the perfect choice. The essential items unique to every man are often muddled with mundane details such as width of the lapels or button stance that can often be manipulated by trends.

Majority of off the rack suits and shirts for men are manufactured to fit one standard. Thus oftentimes, men’s clothing is ill-fitting and unflattering on most population of men of considerable height or built. A man with innate fashion sense knows the value of the clothing’s proportion to his overall look. And he knows that proportion matters when it comes to his custom made suits or shirts. Men with great taste are aware of this and the century is blessed with a few gentlemen who carry themselves well enough to be part of an elite pool of well-dressed celebrities. Cary Grant and Steve McQueen are not only celebrated Hollywood actors of their time but also praised for their timeless fashion. Today’s generation consists of not only actors but stylish multi-faceted celebrities like Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Ryan Gosling. These modern gentlemen have their suits, shirts, and jackets tailor made to flatter their strengths and downplay their weaknesses. It may hold true that a few body types won’t look flattering in certain types of clothes, but this shouldn’t limit one body type to just one style. An important element to consider in dressing appropriately is getting clothes with the right proportions to match your body.

It is essential for the jacket to have the right proportion to capture the individual’s natural body  structure. A man with a large head will look proportioned by wearing a jacket with slightly wide shoulders, while sloping shoulders will benefit someone with a smaller head. In a similar fashion, the jacket’s gorge is a vital area of where the collar and lapels converge thus creating a notch. A deeper gorge looks better for taller men while a higher gorge works well with a shorter man. In terms of width, the lapels of the coat must be proportioned person’s upper body width. Neglecting the width may result in an ill-fitting coat that emphasizes his already tall height. Regardless of your height, the length of the jacket should reach the knuckle of your thumb especially when you are standing with arms resting at your sides, and the sleeves’ end must at least reach your wrist area. For men with longer arms, just make sure your suit jacket reaches your backside.

The jacket will not be complete without a dress shirt underneath it. The size together with the shape of the shirt’s collar should be taken in consideration with the shape of the man’s face. It should be noted that there are also a few types of shirt collars that can either emphasize your already long face or flatter it. A long and narrow face can look proportioned or balanced by getting a shirt with a spread collar instead. As for the jacket lapels, it should be able to cover the shirt’s collar points when unbuttoned. The collar of the dress shirt must reach ½ inch beyond the collar of the jacket. The shirt’s cuff should extend from the sleeves of the jacket of about ¼ to ½ an inch.

These proportion guides are merely reminders and may still vary depending on the wearer. The great thing about fashion in general is that rules are made to be broken, and this is where trends are often born. Retailers often market their clothes by using beautiful models with skinny bodies in their pictures. Some of them may either be wearing clothes that are too baggy or too skinny that oftentimes appears unproportioned. But not everyone can look great in anything. The designer clothes appeal to us because we are simply drawn to the models that appear on their marketing campaigns. But the mind is often as fickle as fashion itself and what we once thought of as trendy and appealing may not be as trendy in a few years. Regardless of what fashion dictates during that time, proportion matters whenever you purchase clothes. After all, the right proportion can make all the difference in how a man carries himself with his tailored clothes.
